Description

This is a lovely small oil painting on a canvas-board, created by Arkansas artist Foster Handford. It shows a big-eyed dog that is very intently watching a water puddle that was made by a wet umbrella. The work is mostly done in shades of brown, black, and green, but the umbrella has a bright orange handle. The painting was sketched, before it was painted, and some faint traces of the sketching can be seen in the finished work. It is signed, by the artist, in the lower left corner. There is also a stamp on the back of this unframed artwork, which reads “Foster Handford Art Gallery, Greers Ferry, Ark. 72067”. Paintings like this one are hard-to-find, because Foster Handford was well-known as a landscape artist. Although his landscape paintings sometimes come onto the market, his other types of paintings rarely come onto the market.

Foster Handford (1905-1990) was born and raised in/near Batesville, Arkansas. He taught himself to paint, when he was a boy. As a teenager, he painted signs for local businessmen. As a young man, in the 1930s, he was known as one of the best outdoor ‘sign painters’ in the Ozarks region and he secured a contract to paint/decorate a group of Standard filling stations in Arkansas. In his young adult life, there was also a time that he made a living as a fisherman. He later became very well-known as a landscape painter. His favorite painting subjects were beautiful scenes in the Ozarks. He initially had a studio that he shared with his brother, who was the sign painter and noted landscape artist Charles Handford. He later had his own studio in Greers Ferry. It was frequented, for many years, by tourists.

The artwork is 7 7/8 inches (wide) by 9 7/8 inches (high).

This painting is in good condition, with no tears or stains. There are a few areas around the edges (mainly on the bottom) that have very light scuffs/wear, as is to be expected on unframed art of this age.
