NEW LINE! Natural Wood Bullroarer *Willow* for Moon or Water Rituals!

This is something I haven't offered here on Etsy until now... not for any good reason, but simply because I haven't got round to it in the two years I've been selling here! It's a bullroarer, fashioned from a "plank" I sawed from a branch of a Pussy Willow tree that is regularly pollarded in order to provide dense cover for nesting birds. I never cut wood especially for crafting, but always make use of what has to be removed for reasons of tree health, vehicular or pedestrian access or habitat management.Bullroarers are whirled round on the end of a length of cord and as they twist through the air they create a sound quite unlike anything else; an atmospheric hum that seems to resonate with the very bones of Mother Earth and can be varied with the speed of the swing as well as the length of the cord. In magic, they are used to call the spirits of the ancestors or local guardians, or to keep away any malevolent entities. Although most commonly associated with straightforward communication and the Australian aboriginal people, artifacts like this have been found connected to many primitive cultures throughout the world and are increasingly being used by modern witches and pagans of all kinds.

This particular bullroarer is quite small and light, convenient for indoor ritual and very easy to take with you anywhere. It's roughly surfboard shaped and the surface of the wood is silky smooth to the touch. The wood has seasoned to a light honey amber and has a remarkable depth of pattern in the slightly iridescent grain markings. There is one small knot near the end which is visible from both sides. You don't often see anything made from Willow wood any more (except cricket bats!) although it has been used for items such as floorboards in the past. Willow is known for its strong affinity with moon or water spirits and also increases psychic energy, so it makes perfect tools for creating sacred space.

This bullroarer comes with about three feet of waxed cotton cord, attached with a knot that won't twist loose (especially important if you want to avoid the hazard of high-speed flying missiles inside your home!) I use waxed cotton cord because unlike most other types of cord or string it is braided, not twisted. Twisted cord will unravel over time from the constant twisting of the wooden blade in the air, which has a weakening effect on the cord as well as looking unsightly. However, even this type of braided cord will wear out eventually, so please check it at regular intervals and replace it if neccessary.

As usual, all the work was done the traditional way by hand, with no help from power tools of any kind. Both the cord and the oiled finish are completely free of animal products and there are no metal parts.

This is about the smallest size of bullroarer I regularly make, but I can make them from any wood I have that's suitable, either larger or smaller than this one, a slightly different shape, or with runes or other symbols burnt into the wood. I can also add a bead or toggle handle to the end of the cord to ensure it doesn't cut into your fingers during particularly energetic swinging and make it easier to hang on to. Just drop me a convo if you'd like one custom made to your own specifications, the only criterion for bullroarers is that the piece of wood be fairly thin and longer than it is wide.

Willow is a very magical tree that increases psychic energy, so it’s excellent as a general purpose wand. It is believed to share the essence of snakes. It is useful for magic concerning healing and fertility, and it is said to aid divination and bring inspiration. Its powers are strongest at night, under the moon.

Size: Just over six and a half inches long, an inch and three quarters wide and under a quarter of an inch thick.
167mm x 47mm x 5mm.

It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.

Please exercise common sense whilst using this bullroarer... if you bash it against people it will hurt, and if you bash it against things like walls, ceilings, furniture or trees then something's likely to get damaged. It's not a toy, but a serious tool for your magical practices, and is not designed to be used by children or idiots. :-)

For a full list of the woods I might have available as well as their magical properties and a bunch of other stuff, check out my blog at: http://www.mazedasastoat.blogspot.com/
