Description
The Community Garden Shawl pattern has a center cable section that echoes its garden inspiration, as well as eyelet sections, slipped stitches, and a ruffly edging for a cozy wrap. Knit in fingering-weight yarn, this is a cozy layering piece to ward off a bit of chill on the shoulders or to wear draped around your neck as a neck wrap.
Inspired by a neighborhood community garden in Manhattan, this shawl looks best in a solid color or just slightly variegated, but sometimes a yarn just talks to you, right? I used a very multi-colored green yarn to this once because the color *felt* like a garden . . . and it works for me.
CONSTRUCTION: This shawl uses a garter tab cast-on and then is worked down and out from the top center, with 2 spines of stitches. The 2 side panels include eyelet stitches that are created with yarn overs, with a center panel of a repeating leafy cable pattern that branches out on its fourth one. A border section that includes slipped stitches, more yarnovers, and a ruffled edge finishes off the shawl.
FINISHED SIZE: one size of approximately 35-inch (89 cm) side panels / 34 inches (86 cm) bottom center panel width / 21 inches (53 cm) depth of center panel, but depending on the yarn used and its stretchiness, the size may vary slightly.
GAUGE: Gauge is not crucial to this pattern, but it will affect the yarn usage and how aggressively you may want to block your shawl, so I recommend knitting a gauge swatch: 22 sts / 30 rows = 4" (10 cm) square in stockinette.
DIFFICULTY: Uses yarn overs, increases, decreases, tab cast-on, slipped stitches, cable knitting.
YARN: 2 skeins of 1 color (approx. 780-800 yds / 713-732 m) of fingering-weight (4-ply) yarn.
***I love to see your knitted versions of my patterns, so it would be great if you would tag the pattern #communitygardenshawl and/or #citystitchette in any WIP or finished shawl photos on social media! :-)
