~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I designed this Scottish Highlands Tam to be a replica of the tams as worn by the characters of the TV show “Outlander”. It is a full “Scottish Bonnet” style tam that can be worn by men or women. This style of Tam was customarily worn by 17th & 18th century Scots.
This pattern is best suited to an advanced beginner to intermediate knitter. You'll need to know how to knit in the round on circular needles using the magic loop method. How to knit, purl, do increases and decreases, how to follow a basic knitting pattern, and how to felt a knitted item.
The tam pattern shows instructions for 3 sizes M, L & XL, but also info on how to size up and down one more size if needed.
The tam is knit on circular needles (using the magic loop method), and then welt felted (fulled). I’ve included extra photos in the pattern to show how things should look as you go along, as well as a tutorial with photos on how to felt and shape your tam after it is knit.
You’ll need approximately 250 yards of a 100% wool yarn, like Knit Picks, Wool of the Andes (or other similar wool) in a worsted weight. You’ll also need 2 circular needles (or interchangeable needles) in size 7 and size 8, a cable that is 40” (for Magic Loop technique), and 1 large eye tapestry needle.
