Before I started woodworking 35 years ago, I managed an apartment building in San Francisco. The waterheater that was made in the 1920's needed to be replaced and I kept the wonderful Art Nouveau cast iron legs that supported it, knowing that they would come in handy someday.

Last year, I finally found a way to put them to good use. A cylinder of old-growth redwood was made to fit and a 54" octagon top was made using both Redwood and Sedona red-rock flagstone. A hole for an umbrella can be drilled if you wish.

Six coats of exterior varnish protects the wood and eight coats of sealer keeps the flagstone from staining.

On the deck or by the pool, this sturdy table will last for decades with minimal care.
