Materials: woad, woad seed, organically grown, non GMO, seeds, pesticide free, herbicide free
IMPORTANT: Woad can be invasive in certain areas and is considered a "noxious weed" in certain US states. Because of this, I cannot ship to the following states: California, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, Colorado, or New Mexico. See https://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=ISTI for more information.
International shipping is not available.
Used to make blue dye since ancient times, woad has tinted fibers for the ancient Egyptians, the Vikings, and now for you! These seeds are carefully saved from my own dye garden in Minnesota. I never use pesticides or herbicides and all seeds are hand collected and sorted. **These seeds were harvested in 2020 for 2021 season planting**
Woad (Isatis tinctoria) is a biennial member of the Brassica family, and as such is a fairly easy plant to grow. It is frost-tolerant and can be directly seeded outside as soon as the ground is workable. Planting up to and just past the last frost date in your areas should give your plants time to grow, and you can get one to three (or more?) harvests depending on your growing season! I usually sow more seeds than I think I'll need since young plants may be transplanted.
First year woad leaves hold the blue dye potential, but second year plants can be kept for their yellow flowers and seeds, or the leaves used for a pink dye! It takes some coaxing to get a blue color from the leaves, either via a reduction method or traditional vat. I recommend Jenny Dean's Wild Color book as an excellent resource.
