Beluch bagface
This antique small bag, or Balisht, was made around 1880 by nomadic Beluchi tribes people, who travelled between the Hindukush and the deserts of Baluchistan in the south, herding sheep and goats, from whose wool/ hair they made rugs, bags, tent and camel trappings/ decorations. This saddlebag once had a flatweave back .

This small bag may have been a pillow in the yurt; or possibly other uses. It has Silk highlights, so we can guess it was a special piece for its maker. Often, the women of the tribe, before marriage, as well as making everyday artefacts for use as grain bags, saddle bags salt bags et al, would also gradually put together a collection of pieces as their dowry. This may well have been a dowry piece, as silk was prized and rare amongst the nomads, and its use often denotes a special item.

A stunning tribal artefact, magical colours, glowing with the subtle and luminous patina that comes with great age.

Made with all natural dyes, the electric blues are from the familiar indigo plant, reds and browns from madder, yellows from crocus and oak galls for the deep browns, unusual and rare green, from a two stage dyeing process, indigo and saffron most likely. sky blues, various shades of madder, a lovely dusk violet/purple from the aubergine, and natural camel hair.

This piece has all the signs of great age; some abrasions, a small hole near the kelim end, some selvage repair, etc.
Please be aware that this piece, lovely as it is, does have some wear. But for a textile as old as this one is, its doing ok.

Professionally cleaned by us, in our own mountain spring water, using eco wool wash, no chemicals or detergents.

Size is 34 X 16 1/2 inches, or 42 X 86 cm.

Shanti.
