This vintage barbed wire heart was made from old dairy farm fencing that is well over 60 years old. The milkers are long gone now, the farm fields abandoned, but the farm itself still stands down in the hollow about a half mile from our home.

As I washed the barbed wire it smelled of earth and decaying vegetation since I had to pull alot of it out of a muddy bank where I found it settling in the field. I dried it slowly in the oven, then carefully formed my heart so as not to create any breakage. I added a drop or two of glue for stability then coated it several times with Rustoleum black satin spray paint.

Pretty red dyed saddle hackle feathers were glued into the center of the heart to add a little softness to the surrounding weathered barbed wire. For a finishing touch, I suspended the heart from a satin ribbon bow. The bow is actually a shade or two darker in person.

My finished heart measures 12 3/4" from top to bottom (including top ribbon length), is 4 3/4" wide and 3/4" deep. The heart itself measures 6" from top to bottom.

NOTE: Please handle carefully as some of the barbs are still fairly sharp. :] !
