An unusual specimen - a seething cauldron of rounded textures in emerald green and black: this is an untreated 21.5-carat Malachite from Africa, cut as an oval cabochon measuring 23 x 14 x 5 mm. Adding to the visual interest of the swirly lines is the high polish on both sides of this gem, making it a real pleasure to see and touch. A lovely piece to set as a focal for a brooch or a pendant, perhaps a cuff bracelet or a statement ring if protection is given to the stone. It would work well against either a dark metal to harmonize with the dark tones of the stone, or contrasting with a bright metal like silver or white gold.

The pictures give an idea of how the gemstone looks under various lighting conditions and different backgrounds. The last picture shows the detail on the back of the gem.

Malachite is graded 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and is sensitive to both heat and acids.

Malachite is the anniversary gemstone for the 13th year of marriage and is associated with the astrological signs of Capricorn and Scorpio. It is also said to attract money, which is always a good reason to have a gemstone!
