Description

This 18x24 in charcoal drawing is from my series of work titled "Monsters and Lore." In this series, I explore my fascination of everything spooky; the art included observes folklore, classic horror staples, and all things playfully macabre.

"Campfire stories" is a perfect representation of the "Monsters and Lore" series. The scene toys with a superficially disturbing ambiance; at first glance the face in the flame appears demonic, but upon closer observation the image reveals a face lit by flashlight. All at once, the image evokes the memories of scary stories and folklore told at night by campfire, and brings back the feelings of youth - when being scared was something whimsical and innocent.

About the artist, Courtney Lofton :
As a multimedia artist, I am not attached to a lone medium; I respect and cherish the different qualities and strengths of all media, and I use the tool that best suits the style and story of each piece. Though my work has visual variety, there is always contextual and stylistic continuity.
The inspirations for my subject matter are folklore and storytelling; civil rights and social justice; and American, mid-century pop culture. Most often my work is critical, celebratory and reflective of these things.
