This handwoven textile is from in the town of Sideman, Bali, where Songket is very well known.

Songket is in the weaving family of brocades and involves weaving gold or silver thread with silk or cotton. In the case of this specific textile, the cloth is woven of cotton and intricate pattern is woven with gold metal thread.

Because of the age of this textile, the thread used is quite thick and lends a bit more weight to the fabric than a typical weaving. The gold thread itself is actually gold metal thread wound over cotton thread, which you can see in places where some of the metal thread is worn away to the inner thread.

Songket textiles used to be only available to royalty or used during official ceremonies such as weddings as the metal thread used to be truly wrapped with gold leaf. This textile was probably used as a shoulder cloth, or as the top sarong worn by men in ceremony.

This textile is in good condition even though one can see the years of use on the edges where the metal thread has worn away a bit of the cotton fabric and one small hole, it is still a really beautiful, unique textile!

Measures 110cm x 40cm (43in x 16in)
