One of the original "new bride" cookbooks from the 1940s! The American Woman's Cook Book, edited by Ruth Berolzheimer of the Culinary Arts Institute, vintage 1940 edition. This is a hard cover cookbook with thumb tabs for locating recipes and a hard-to-find original dust jacket, which we've placed in a mylar cover.

This hefty general cookery book, like many of its era, was often given to as new bridge as her very first cookbook. It is full of basic knowledge for the new cook, including shopping for food, nutrition and meal planning, table setting and service, meat carving, herbs and spices, wine and food and even a section on foreign words and phrases. Recipes are divided into several dozen chapters, dedicated to topics such as Yeast Breads, Meat and Game, Entrees and Made Over Dishes, Cakes, Candies and more. All said, there are 928 pages with 5000 recipes and household hints and 230 photographs. A book like this would have been an indispensable household resource in the days before the internet!

928 pages; 5.5 x 8.25 x 2" deep; 1940.

Condition: Very Good hard cover; Acceptable Dust Jacket. Cover shows some soil and light shelf wear; inside, pages are very clean and crisp and the book retains much of it's like-new stiffness. Jacket has open and closed tears and is missing a chunk at top of spine; jacket is protected inside a clear jacket cover. This book may have been stored in a kitchen, but it looks to have gotten little actual use.
