About This Image:

This one is personal. As a result, it has been through many incarnations. Always at the heart of it is the boy

Facing the deep. The vast. The unknown

At the core of my beliefs is the idea that we are never closer to our true nature and ourselves then when we are children. So much of what leads us astray is the constant programming of the adult world. The rush to be in it.

This is not to say that we should not "grow up", but that term is all to often nothing more than an excuse for what amounts to screwing up. Losing ourselves. Betraying our own heart far deeper than anyone else ever can or will.

As children, we took risks without fear of recovery.
We cultivated our world through strong imagination.
We held so few things in or against
We dreamed big and unabashedly

When we are taught how to be adults, we forget that these things are all still a part of us.
A large part of us.

We lose the way because we are so busy trying to fit in.
To make good on our future.
To be something.

The something though is exactly what we already are.

In this sense, the choice is ours. To give our attention to that true self.
To swim deep and free or to sink from the stones, from the unbearable weight, that we often carry within our hearts.

"Sink or Swim"

What resides
inside vast spaces
where all our emptiness
could drown an ocean
are little, synchronized schools of sorrow
swimming down through darkness
looking for bottom to settle under them
And inviting us to follow

Some of us will go
and some of us will, instead,
follow a solitary, warm blooded hope further out to sea
struggling with possessive tides and storms
we’ll battle as body and mind collide
overwhelmed with the charge

We’ll tread water,
listening for distant bellows
and buoys that mark us
somewhere deep inside
a signal telling us
we are near
