Description

A wonderful gilt and enamel buckle in an Egyptian style, dating to c.1900 - or perhaps a little earlier. Featuring a blue glass scarab cabochon, with winged effect in enamel, and co-ordinated blue glass domed cabs top and bottom.

Make:

Manufactured by the Parisian firm of ‘Piel Frères’, who were founded in 1855. Described as an art nouveau fashion jewellery company, they were awarded a Grand Prix at the Parisian 'Exposition Universelle' in 1900 - alongside the likes of Lalique, Boucher etc. Their stylish but affordable 'art jewels' took the exhibition by storm.

"The owner, Alexandre Piel, with his chief designer the sculptor Gabriel Stalin, realised that though the materials used could be fairly inexpensive, the quality of design, manufacture and finish had to be as good as that lavished on an expensive piece of jewellery" (Victor Arwas (2000), Art Nouveau: The French Aesthetic)

I've included in the last few photographs an example of another Piel Frères buckle, from Ginger Moro's 'European Designer Jewellery' - price guide in 1995 was 700-800 USD?!

Measures:

80mm x 50mm approx (just over 3" x 2" approx)

Condition:

The enamel is very good. As you can see if you look very closely there are some minor chips where the prongs of the setting meet the scarab. Due to the position behind the prongs, it's not immediately obvious.

There is some minor verdigris to the reverse of the two small roundels as seen.

Overall good to very good with noted minor flaws.

PLEASE NOTE: Box is too small and therefore for display only. Will be carefully gift wrapped for postage, and sent securely in a postal box.
