this tribal Tuareg necklace is comprised of multicolor jasper beads, silver accents, and an african pendant from morocco. the circumferance of the necklace is approximately 18 inches and the pendant is approximately 1.5 inches

Tribal Tuareg cross design from Morocco and common to areas that border the Sahara desert. These designs were particularly close to my heart when i lived in morocco and are made by tuareg craftsmen and silversmiths in the desert though i have also seen them in places like Tunisia.

The tuareg people were known to foreigners as the blue men due to the brilliant blue color of their turbans aswell as the use of henna for sun protection leaving a sort of blue hue on their skin. They still exist as a nomadic berber or Amazigh culture.

The tradition behind these designs is somewhat unclear though it is said that the four corners of the cross represent the four directions, and that Tuareg men often give them to their sons as a coming of age gift to offer protection for all their travels, though they are not exclusively for men. This piece is very unique to north and west africa and an exceptional representation of tribal design and culture.
