DESCRIPTION:
It was during the Bourbon Restoration when France "experienced a period of stable economic prosperity and the preliminaries of industrialization" that these lovely sleeper earrings where created.
Crafted in 18K solid gold, sleeper earrings make it possible, due to their comfort, to be worn while sleeping, hence the term "sleeper" earrings. The French term for sleepers are "dormeuses" from the verb "dormir" which means to sleep.

While gold was available, natural diamonds where a rare luxury during that period and was often replaced by white stone or quartz. To enhance their brilliance, the craftsman would often set the paste using a foil back technique or "paillon" which is defined as "a small piece of foil...inserted in between the gemstone and the metal backing to help it reflect light."

These earrings feature a lever front closure. Once on your ear lobes, they can stay an indefinite amount of time due to their comfort. You can even go swimming with them on without the fear of losing them!

They make wonderful collector's items. But they can also be used to dress up and to show how much you appreciate the historical value of period pieces.

They are in very good estate condition in spite of their age, showing just a minimum amount of use. The eagle head French assay mark is visible on the item.
