"Spices and Herbs Around the World", by Elizabeth S. Hayes, Copyright 1961. First Edition. This cookbook features beautiful art on the dust jacket and frontis piece by George Solonevich, and line drawings of herbs by J.M. Yeats throughout the book. Not just a cookbook, the dust jacket states that the author has compiled material that "the history, romance, adventure, legend, and lore of fragrance, flavor, and beauty...might be shared with many, many others."

For each spice, we are given a background of country of origin, methods of cultivation, it's place in the kitchen, and recipes. The author also makes suggestions on how to set up a kitchen herb garden, with growing charts and planting plans. There are methods of preserving and preparing spices.

Recipes include: BETH'S SPICE CAKE, BLUEBERRY PIE, WASSAIL BOWL, ANISETTE AMBROSIA, SAVORY TAMALE PIE, APPLE ALE, CAFE AU LAIT, CHRISTMAS CARDAMOM CAKE, GINGER 'N' HONEY CAKE, MEXICAN WEDDING CAKE, CAMOMILE TEA, CHARCOAL BROILED STEAK A LA ED AND BETTY, ICEBERG SALAD, DANDELION WINE, HOT BUTTERED RUM, GARLIC CLAM CRISPS DE BLANCHE, CRAB MEAT SALAD, EGGNOG, FLOATING ISLAND, PARSLEY BROILED FISH FILLETS, CANDIED GINGER, HORSERADISH AND CHEESE SANDWICHES, COFFEE-GLAZED HAM LOAF, GRAPE PIE, POT DE CREME, PARSLEY PARTY LIVER PATE, ORANGE SYRUP, MOCHA ICING, BLACK-SEED SIMPSON SALAD, KELSAZ ENCHILADAS, PARFAIT RHUBARB PIE, RUBY RED PUNCH, GINGER-TOMATO PRESERVES, CREOLE SQUASH, SUGAR BEET, ENGLISH THYME STUFFING, WATER CRESS SANDWICH, YAM CRISPS, and many more.

This cookbook is in excellent condition with nice clean pages and no wear to the hardcover. Light wear to the dust jacket (a couple of small tears at the top), but otherwise the book looks fantastic. Measures 9 1/2" x 6 1/4" and has 266 pages.
