Wax Resists glaze, and where the clay body shows through on this vase, its toasty browns fade from light golden to ironwood brown. the spokes of the wheels of the red ten speed extend and converge to create random shapes and patterns. the dark turquoise glaze is matte and full of fascinating variations. the tinted inlay draws out the ten speed and toasted to a blue black next to the fumed out turquoise.
this vase gave me the name of my shop. a series of wax resists and glaze applications created the image of the bike, which to me symbolizes humanity's hope for independence.
bicycles have liberated:
the Irish from the penal laws, stating that an Irishman could not own a horse valued at more than $25
American Suffragettes: women who were not allowed to drive cars or vote were encouraged by susan b anthony to ride bicycles for health and independence
women the world over
Peace Corps Volunteers

bicycles have the power to help liberate us from foreign oil!
