Chefs, the world over, prize this attractive 19th-century Dutch heirloom for its deliciously creamy & nutty flavor.

Also referred to as Borlotti or Cranberry, this is probably one of the best multipurpose beans available. Crisp, stringless and amazingly juicy when eaten fresh. It's very good to use as a snap bean or as a shelled bean when mature. As a snap, harvest when the flat beans turn from lime green to buffed yellow with bright purple stripes. If dried beans are desired, let pods fully mature.

Compact stocky bushes bear abundant purple-violet flowers followed by flat 6" creamy yellow pods mottled with purple tiger stripes. Sunlight helps the colors become vivid, so plant farther apart in the row than normal bean spacing so interior sets develop good color.

Some gardeners consider this bean, a half runner type, somewhat similar to a pole bean. Half-Runner beans typically make short runners from 4 to 7 feet tall, but usually about 5 feet. Pole beans make runners from 6 to 30 feet long. 60 days. 15+ Organic seeds.

~ planting ~

When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost and when temperatures are warm. Note: In very hot summer areas such as the South and Southwest, Sow march for June harvest, and August for late September harvest.

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85 degrees F.

Seed Sowing Depth: 1” deep

Outside Sowing: Direct sow seeds outside at least 1 week after the last frost, since beans are quite sensitive to cold. They should be planted in rich, well drained soil with full sun exposure. If you have never planted beans in your garden before, treat the seeds with a powder inoculant to allow the process of nitrogen fixation to begin. Sow the seeds 1" deep and 3" apart, in rows 2'-3' apart, and press down the earth above them for good soil contact. These seeds rot easily in wet soil, so do not over water them. Germination should take place 7-12 days after planting. For companion planting benefits, plant bush beans near carrots, cucumbers, or corn; avoid planting them near onions.

Tips: Grow in light, well-drained soil, provide adequate, even moisture, especially at flowering time. Dry soil can result in low yields and fibrous pods. Do not over fertilize with nitrogen which results in a surplus of foliage and low, delayed pod growth. Adding inoculant at planting time aids in a larger harvest and more robust plants.

~ harvesting ~

As a snap, harvest when the flat beans turn from lime green to buffed yellow with bright purple stripes. If dried beans are desired, let pods fully mature.

Seriously, the BEST seller on Etsy! Every seed I buy from her germinates within a few days. These green beans germinated with two days! Other seeds take weeks or don’t germinate at all, everyone of her seeds do all the time, it’s amazing!! She always has new stuff for me to try too! She has the most exciting fun things to grow! I’m always finding new things to try! She is great at communicating and all her seeds have great information on how to plant and grow. My seeds all germinated and they’re thriving. Appreciate the information the seller provides so I knew how to plant these.
