Item details

Echium russicum syn. Echium maculatum, Pontechium maculatum (Russian Bugloss)

Biennial/Perennial - Zones 5 to 9

* Seeds per package - 10
* Bloom Time - June
* Bloom Color - Dark-pink through reddish-purple
* Size - 24-36" x 12-18"
* Culture - Best in full sun and drier, well-drained soil. In their second year, the plants produce tall wands packed with small blooms. Secondary, typically smaller, bloom spires follow the first wand and extend the blooming season. May behave as a biennial.
* Characteristics - Difficult to distinguish from Echium amoenum until it begins to bloom. At this point, Echium russicum is much taller and architectural.
* Special Features - The leaves and bloom stems are covered with allergenic hairs that may deter browsing deer. Seedlings are particularly attractive to cats for some reason, so the allergenic hairs will not protect young seedlings from your feline garden helper!
* Germination - Barely cover the seeds with moist potting mix (or surface sow them and press them gently into the potting mix). These germinate rapidly at room temperature (60-70°F), typically in less than a week. Grow the seedlings on in drier conditions.
