Handmade item

Frequently in art history animals are used merely as symbols, which strips them of their individuality. To speak to this issue I made this gilded glass piece based on "The Virgin and Child with St. Anne" by Leonardo da Vinci wherein I removed the titular humans to place emphasis on the lamb and her experience. You will see that by extracting the people the scene becomes more peaceful. In the original, even the gentle Christ is shown straddling the lamb's neck and pulling her ear, treating her as a thing to amuse himself with. The anthropocentric worldview has caused so much hurt, and many religions have helped justify this view through teachings like "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." We live in a world with a problematic power dynamic between humans and animals. This is most poignantly seen in our modern way of raising animals in factories that are so nightmarish to enter that farmers instead use apps to feed and water them. A lamb belongs in a field not a dungeon. The life of a lamb means as much to her as your life means to you.

This piece is on a glass panel measuring 10" x 10" x 1/4". It was made using the traditional technique of verre eglomise, or glass gilding. It is made with 22k genuine gold leaf and reverse painting on glass. The sky section is translucent and is intended to be framed with white paper behind it or hung on a white wall. It comes with shipping insurance.
