There is something about these jars that reminded me of apothecary jar fragments I found in the old barn on our farm in Iowa. My grandfather’s farm was not large, but yielded the most delightful discoveries. My four brothers and sister had little money to buy toys, so we had to make up things to entertain ourselves. My favorite was exploring the old barn. It was so peaceful.

Apart from the daddy long-leg spiders and occasional garter snakes – which seemed to come out of nowhere – the barn was a safe haven for me. When I was alone there, it was my sanctuary. The doleful sounds of the clanking cow bells and the whistles of the red-winged blackbirds drifting through the open loft door were better than any symphony. I would spend hours alone in that loft.

But best of all, it was a place to discover. Pretending to be an archeologist, I found fragments of glass jars, just like the ones in this picture. I’d imagine who had owned them so very long ago. Did it contain an old time cure for rheumatism or some other kind of cure for headaches? I could find only small shards of glass, but the stories I could make up about them were endless.

Recently, when I found these jars sparkling in the light as they did, they evoked memories of those simpler times. I had to capture them as a painted memory that would not fad or be broken. So, here they are, for your enjoyment. Maybe they remind you of happier times, maybe you just like the colors and play of light. Whatever the reason, I hope you enjoy them. I know I always will.
