I created this beautiful unique ruby throated hummingbird pendant completely by hand using fabrication methods in the mid-70's. It is constructed of sterling silver sheet for the back and sterling silver square wire for the section dividers. For those familiar with metal working, square wire is not easy to bend and form into intricate shapes like round or half-round wire. After the foundation of the base, sides and dividers were cleanly soldered I then cut each individual stone to fit precisely into it's chosen location. This is known as channel work. The hummingbird's eye proved the most challenging due to it's small size. When all the stones were cut and set into the piece I then ground and polished the stones to a smooth and radiant finish. This piece started out as only a brooch with a pin backing, however I decided to make it adaptable to being worn as a pendant or a brooch by adding a removable bale that slips over the pin on the back so that it can be worn as a pendant with your favorite chain. It hangs very nicely on a chain. It measures 2 3/4 inches wide from wing tip to beak and 1 5/8 inches from the top of the head to the tip of the tail feathers. This is a totally unique one of a kind creation and will not be repeated by me. I truly hate to part with this beautiful creation but I want it to find a good home with someone who can appreciate its beauty and the hard work that went into its creation. This listing is for the pendant/brooch only. I will ship this fully insured, signature required.
Item # N050

The stones I used were chrysoprase for the wings and body; spectrolite for the wing tips, eye, and tail; mother of pearl for the abdomen; and petrified dinosaur bone (for the ruby red throat).

Chrysoprase is a gemstone variety of chalcedony that receives it's green color due to very small quantities nickel present during its formation and has a vitreous, translucent appearance.

Spectrolite is a rare gem variety of labradorite feldspar that exhibits a very deep color and a rich intense iridescence much like the color play of a peacock feather or dragonfly. The spectrolite in this creation exhibits this quality very nicely as the piece is turned in the light.

Mother of Pearl is the nacre produced by mollusks is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some mollusks as an inner shell layer. It is also what makes up pearls and is very strong, resilient, and iridescent.

Petrified Dinosaur Bone – This is an actual dinosaur bone that has been petrified, in other words, the organic materials comprising the bone have been replaced by mineral deposits over millions of years. The rich red color in this piece is most likely due to a rich deposit of nickel or possibly iron. As this is a metamorphic stone I would say the coloration is probably due to nickel.

This creation will ship gift boxed and fully insured, signature required, by USPS First Class Mail unless otherwise requested. Please convo me prior to purchase.
