This is a beautiful hand colored print taken from a book on ferns by Margaret Plues (1828-1901). She was an Irish and British field-bryologist and wrote several popular books on natural history. She was one of the women in the UK who helped popularize botany for the Victorians. The artist who hand colored the prints is Vincent Brooks. The bookplate was rescued from a book about British Ferns first published in 1866. I was told by the previous owner this edition of the book is a later reissue, but certainly before 1898. She believes it is the 2nd or 3rd edition and most likely dates between 1876-1881. According to the list of plates (a copy will be included with the bookplate) the three ferns depicted in plate 11 are:

Asplenium Germanicum
Blechnum boreale
Asplenium septentrionale

CONDITION: The plate is in excellent condition. The colors remain vibrant and rich. Unfortunately, my scanner did not pick up how vibrant the colors are. The paper is heavy and can be handled. The paper has aged to a creamy white. There is a raw edge where it was sewn into the book. It measures approximately 5 x 7 1/2 inches.
