I'm truly delighted to offer up this glorious 1930s dress by designer Hattie Carnegie. I had originally bought it with a Holiday collection in mind, but I couldn't bear to hold onto it that long - it's too compelling and rare. The material is an incredible satin matelassé, crepe backed and lustrous. While I would swear that the straps were originally meant to be a halter, they do not sit right that way, and I've stitched them back as I found them. So it begins with wide straps on a fairly high neckline, above a bodice made of bias cut segments. the bodice is lined with silk chiffon. The long front peplum is edged with stoat. Spidery amber flowers and golden stars embellish both the bodice and the skirt. I believe the embellishements were added in the era - the silk chiffon has been partly opened on the interior to allow for access to do beadwork. It closes up the back left with a series of hooks and snaps.

I've photographed this on a couple backgrounds, as the white made the warm neutral of this piece come out a bit cool.

✂-----Measurements

Bust: 34"-37"
Waist: 27"-30"
Hips: 36"-43"
Length: 61"

Label: Hattie Carnegie, Inc. Little Salon / NRA label is present
Material: Rayon
Condition: Good, as is

As noted, I believe the embellishments were added in the era, but I think after it was worn some - there are abrasions and little snags to the matelassé, particulrly on the front of the skirt. When turned inside out, there's a notable spill stain that is not visible on the exterior, and I think someone took a great deal of trouble to ensure their treasured gown was still wearable. One internal weight is missing from the back - there is one at the left but not right. The fur has tanned the satin below it, and should not be removed except to clean the dress. Despite the flaws, this dress is sturdy, incredibly wearable and truly glows. It has been priced at approximately half of what I might otherwise charge.
