Materials

wood, hemp string, plastic, stainless steel

If your bundle of fluff has been flunking step-up school, this training wand might be just what you need! This dedicated step-up perch is decorated with unique wood-burning patterns and wrapped with hemp string to make it easier for your birdie to get on and off it. For the more reluctant or shy little birbs, having a treat on the perch should make it easier to persuade them to get on it. So four little holes of varying diameters allow you to easily attach a little reward (aka, millet!) to the end of the wand. And if your parrot doesn't care for millet, no problem! Just put a few seeds or a small piece of their favorite treat in the larger hole at the tip of the perch and problem solved! (My sun conure Luna, for example, will do just about anything for a tiny bit of dried papaya) The inscription on the wand is a reminder to say "step up!" every time your little acrobat gets on it. This will reinforce the command for times when you don't have the wand with you. Finally, for the ambitious birbs and parronts out there, the very tip of the wand has a flower bead to use in target training. (Here's a video on target training if you'd like to know more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaOicTtwIZo) And don't worry, the nail used to attach the flower bead is a stainless steel nail.

This is a lovingly-made step-up training wand that I hope will make training your bird companions a little bit easier. One of my own birds, a cockatiel named Miru, never learned to step up and I've been using one of these wands to train him. I recommend it for small to medium-sized parrots, such as budgies/parakeets, parrotlets, linnies, cockatiels and conures. With this wand and a little bit of patience and training, your smart birb will have a step-up degree in no time! :-)

When ordering, please choose your color (color of the bead) from the drop-down menu. The wood burning patterns are all the same, but since it's handmade, slight variations do occur.

Overall dimensions:
Length: 12 inches

Shipping policies

Shipping charges include shipping AND handling. Prior to shipping, each item is carefully and individually packaged and wrapped. I use as much recycled (and always clean!) shipping material (boxes, bubble wrap, etc.) as possible to protect the toys on their way to you. I enjoy working on each package and hope you will appreciate the attention to detail. Shipping prices are based on USPS rates. Packages under 16 ounces usually ship with first-class service, while packages over 1 pound ship via either Priority Mail or Parcel Select, depending on overall weight and dimensions of your package. If you would prefer priority mail or express priority mail, please contact me BEFORE PLACING YOUR ORDER so that I can modify the listing to reflect a higher shipping charge. Shipping is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Most orders are processed and shipped within 48 hours on weekdays and 72 hours on weekends and U.S. holidays.

Additional policies

* All Perches4Change Bird Toys & Products items are made and stored in a clean, dry, and smoke-free environment.

** VERY IMPORTANT NOTES ON TOY SAFETY (Please read and disseminate):

- All bird toys and products present a certain degree of risk to pet birds and no toy is indestructible or 100% safe at all times (remember, parrot beaks are very powerful and they can chew through most materials with enough time and opportunity);
- The same exact toy may pose a risk to one bird but not another, so in addition to considering the safety of a toy in general, it is very important to consider the safety of a particular toy for a particular bird;
- It is important to choose the appropriate size toy for your pet bird (the same beads that are safe for one bird may pose a chocking/ingestion hazard to others);
- When introducing new toys to your pet bird(s), supervise them closely until you can be sure that they are interacting with the toy safely;
- Check and inspect your bird toys often and regularly for any potential risks (such as plastic parts becoming brittle and/or breaking into smaller pieces and ropes or fabric posing a risk of entanglement by fraying);
- Promptly remove any toy parts that have become loose, frayed, or damaged;
- Clean your bird toys often;
- Dispose of any metal parts that begin to rust or show any signs of oxidation.
- If you choose to buy perches with zin-placed wing nuts and washers, please be mindful that zinc, if consumed, is highly toxic to birds. If you notice that your bird touches the metal parts of the perch regularly, promptly swap them for stainless steel parts. In addition, if your parrot chews a wooden perch to the point that the internal screw begins to show, dispose of the perch immediately to avoid contact between your bird and the metal.)

Following these steps will help keep your cherished feathered friend safe, comfortable, and happy! (For more information on pet bird safety, check http://stuff4petz.com/safe-bird-toys-things-to-consider-when-making-homemade-bird-toys/ )
