Description

We have here a vintage souvenir ring featuring an Aztec eagle warrior or as it's known in Mexico, a caballero aguila. This is important here since this has enamel in the green-white-red colors of the Mexican flag.

Eagle warriors were a group of elite infantrymen in the army of the Aztec Empire. Members of this warrior society were either noble birth or others who had distinguished themselves on the battlefield. In Aztec mythology, the eagle was regarded as a symbol of the sun and so the eagle warrior was a soldier of the sun. They dressed like eagles, adorning themselves with eagle feathers and wore headgear made of an eagle head with an opening that allowed the wearer to look through the beak. The Aztecs believed a male should become a great warrior because his duty was to “feed the sun with the blood of the enemy.”

• Mixed Metal
• Aztec eagle warrior with fleur-de-lys
• Hallmark: MEXICO
• Sized 10
• Ring face: ~ 1 1/8" x 3/4"

Vintage souvenir rings, otherwise known as “Mexican Biker Rings,” date back to the 1930s. They were sold to traveling tourists and through novelty catalogs such as the Johnson Smith novelty catalogs in the late 40s and 50s. Rings like this were worn by American GIs returning back from the war, rebellious teenagers, fraternal organizations and lodges, motorcycle club members and really anyone who wanted a piece of the outlaw culture.

• This is a vintage item and exhibits signs of wear typical for items from this era
• Ring sizes may vary a bit due to the size and shape of these rings
• All sales are final unless we’ve made a big mistake in our listing
