Wool Felt, Rabbit Felt or Straw:
The standard Wool Felt is made from sheep wool. I also offer Rabbit Felt and Beaver Felt options and straw for summer or more tropical climates. See other listings for ordering.

Black or White lining are included. White lining is standard in felts, but if you prefer a black lining, please specify in the notes.

The brim edge is reinforced with wire and covered with with black grosgrain. The Grosgrain Ribbon band or the Braid Cord and Tassels are also included with your selection. Please see the pictures for tassel options. The full, single tassels are standard. If you prefer, please request the double tier tassels in the personalization box.

Hat sizing is in inches or cm, please. I don’t trust that your hat will fit you using Men’s American Hat Sizes. Most wooden blocks are very old (including mine) and there many hat block makers 100 years ago which could have caused slight variations in size. The blocks I use for the Cappello Romano are new and were not produced using an American Hat Size, but are in inches.

I custom make each Saturno and sometimes have to order more materials from Europe. I will get each finished as quickly as possible but you might allow 2-3 weeks for production in case materials need to be ordered.

Known as the Catholic Clergy “Usual” Hat. This is 100% Wool Felt shaped to the dimensions of the traditional Saturno with a gentle dome crown and wide brim. The hat comes with either a grosgrain outer band or silk cord and tassel. Completed with a soft satin hat lining with a rosette and pleat finish. Made from quality wool from Europe. Interior Heavy 1" Grosgrain Sweat Band. The brim edge on felt hats will have a wire for shaping and narrow grosgrain ribbon.

If you are interested in other felt or trim colors, just ask and I will try to fulfill your request. Each Saturno is made by hand custom made for each order.

The usual clerical hat is familiar to all persons who have travelled in countries where clergymen wear the full ecclesiastical dress outside of their houses, such as Italy, France, Belgium and Spain. Although, according to local customs, it may slightly vary in some of its features, yet its shape and general appearance make it quite different from a layman’s hat. In the eighteenth century, it had assumed the shape of a cocked hat familiar to us as worn by the heroes of the Revolution, and it generally retained this shape until the middle of the nineteenth century; but it has nowadays reverted to its earlier form of a round, broad brimmed, low- crowned hat. In strict etiquette, it should be made of beaver hair; but, for reasons of general economy, and also for greater comfort in summer, it is fre quently made of ordinary felt. The usual hat is uniformly black for all ecclesiastics, except the Pope and Cardinals, as will be noted hereafter; but the crown is encircled with a silk band or cord, the color of which is indicative of the wearer s dignity. The cord seems now generally preferred to the band, it ends in two tassels which slightly hang in back a little to the left. That band or cord is red and gold for Cardinals; green and gold for Patriarchs and Archbishops; green for Bishops and the Regent of the Apostolic Chancery; amaranth red for the first three classes of Protonotaries for the Dome Apostolic ; purple and, outside of Rome, for the Prelates di mantellone ; black for Titular Protonotaries and all other ecclesiastics. We may add that, strictly speaking, the lining of the hat should be of the same color as the band or cord; but it is not always easy to make hatters comply with this last regulation.

This is an amazing hat. I really enjoy it. The product quality is amazing and the shipping time was well worth it. I also really appreciate that Peggy took the time to hand write a personal thank you note. She clearly cares about her customers. I would definitely purchase from her store again.
