It was in the Edo period 1603 - 1867 when Japan was closed to all foreigners that most of the beautiful Japanese kites we know today were developed--each region having its own unique shape. They are normally decorated with characters from Japanese folklore, mythology or have some religious or symbolic meaning. Most Japanese kites are flown without tails. A commonly held belief in Japan is that if a kite requires a tail in order to fly it is not well designed. The popular name now for a Japanese kite is Tako. The symbol for tako is made is made from two characters—one meaning wind and one meaning cloth.

This Japanese inspired quilted wall hanging is individually hand crafted by myself--not mass produced. Each panel is unique with the choices of coordinating fabrics used to frame each piece. 80% of all my fabrics come from Japan. These wall hangings bring a unique and refreshing change from the usual Japanese paper scroll, poster or art work. For followers of feng shui, serene scenes bring good chi to one’s home.

This is one of my large size wall hangings: Approx. 38 1/2 inches wide (from border to border) by 41 inches high (including tabs). Rod NOT INCLUDED due to shipping restraints.

This is a hand-guided, machine-quilted, fabric-framed printed or silk screened solid panel furoshiki— front panel is NOT individually pieced. The special way the individual layers of polyester/and or cotton batting are combined, brings out depth and dimension to these specially selected panels.

This wall hanging design is a collage of different kite styles. The kanji in the bottom corner reads 'kite'. Border in a traditional Japanese homespun look black fabric.

These wall hangings are done with precision and all seams and edges are straight and parallel which does not always show in the photograph due to the natural draping of the fabric. It is particularly difficult to photograph wall hangings and any distortion in their straight lines is due to how the photograph was taken and not the wall hanging itself.

Item weighs approx. 1 lb. 7 ounces with packaging.

Shipping costs listed are best ESTIMATES—weight can vary by a few ounces. Wall hangings ship in bubble wrapped plastic wrapper Priority/Insured to U.S. addresses and International First Class mail elsewhere. Insurance is not offered for overseas shipping.
