This is a 3 large peg doll of St. Margaret of Scotland. about 3 1/2 inches tall. St. Margaret was an English princess who fled with her mother to Scotland to escape the king who had captured their land. She lived in the early 1000's. The king of Scotland, Malcolm, fell in love with Margaret and they were soon married. He was a good man but he, and his court, were very rough. He admired his holy wife's grace and piety. She changed his court for the better. She softened his fiery temper and she and Malcolm helped to feed the poor. She did much to remove false ideas from the realm by obtaining good teachers and building churches. However, four days before her death she learned that her husband and eldest son, Edward, were killed in battle. She prayed, "I thank you, Almighty God, for sending me so great a sorrow to purify me from my sins."

I have painted her holding a black cross as it is a symbol for her. There are some flowers behind it. She has a plaid "tartan" sash around her waist (not historically accurate but cute all the same). She has a gold crown and a lace edged veil to match her sash. Her golden hair is in braids and her eyes are green. On the back of her I have painted her name and "pray for us".

The last photo is another doll I sell of this size in the hands of a young child.

God bless!
