Long before the French and English came through the upper Great Lakes region, Lake Superior was named "Gichigami" ("big water") by the Ojibwe. The 19th century American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow immortalized the lake, writing the name as "Gitche Gumee," in his epic poem "Song of Hiawatha," as did singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot in his 1976 ballad, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
