Vintage 1939 Penmans Sportswear Ad Portfolio: Retro Men's Fashion Booklet

This is very cool! It is a portfolio of ads for Penmans Sportswear. It contains two ads dating back to Spring 1939, that formed the company's national Spring advertising campaign for men's sportswear.

Advertising and fashion historians will love this item!

It is a booklet with Penmans Sportswear Advertising Spring 1939 on the cover. Inside are instructions directed to all Penmans stores on how to use the ads that are contained in the booklet. The booklet contains two ads.

Penmans was borne out of the Ontario Knitting Mills, founded in 1868. In 1890, the company became known as Penmans and was a significant supplier of cotton and woollen goods. In 1960, Penmans was purchased by Dominion Textile and later moved to Toronto. The old Penmans brand was retained for a line of Canadian leisure wear. In 2010, they closed shop.

The booklet measures 14-inches X 8-inches. The booklet is intended for Penmans dealers -- with a list of those dealers at the bottom of the first page. The rest of the page explains the benefits of advertising and why and how dealers should personalize the ads and run them in concert with the Penman's national ad campaign.

The next two pages are the ads. One is a sportswear ad directed at adult men. The other sells Penmans sportswear for boys. Both ads are black and white and definitely 1930s in appearance.

This is such a terrific advertising/fashion item. The booklet is in great vintage condition with no tears or writing on its pages. There is a faded stain on the cover - or it may be shading - hard to tell!
