Gemstone: Opal

I adore OPAL!!! Anyone who knows me has heard me say over and over again, "I used to think that I loved jewelry until I realized it's all about the stones". My personal jewelry collection is predominantly opal.

The opal in the matrix (host stone) is fascinating! This piece is polished and extremely smooth. In this stone, the opal crevices primarily glow a beautiful, iridescent blue/purple. There is some fire - a little yellow, orange, and green.

All findings are sterling silver.

The pendant is about 2 and 3/8 inches long
and the stone itself is a little more than 1 and 1/2 inches long and is about 1 and 1/4 inches at its widest point

Opal is a mineraloid; not a mineral. This is because opals do not have a crystalline structure. Opal is one of the most popular gemstones as they stand in a class by themselves. The special characteristic of opals is their play-of-color (sometimes referred to as fire); a rainbow-like iridescence that changes according to the angle of observation. The fine colors in opal make it a precious stone and highly sought after.

Opal In The Matrix is where the precious opal occurs as a network of veins or infilling of voids or between grains of the host rock (sandstone or ironstone). It generally shows the play of color that opal is known for within the cavities of the host rock. The boulders are sometimes cut into irregular shapes and polished with the brown host rock because of the thinness of the opal seams.
