DESCRIPTIONS: This traditional style mid-Klamath River drum is made by Phil Albers from the Karuk Tribe. The drum is made from elk hide and redwood. The drumstick is madrone wood and deer leather and tied with imitation sinew. This drum is very strong, perfect for younger children and built to be played. Phil says, "I've learned so much about myself from making them that each one has a piece of me integrated into it." The drum was traditionally larger and used for multiple purposes, such as gambling to win necessities for survival, ceremonial purposes, and general singing enjoyment.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Keep the drum dry, but extremely high tempuratures may cause the hide to split or crack. Should the drum get wet and/or loosen, simply put in a dry and moderately warm place until it tightens up again.

WHY IT WAS MADE: Phil said, "I love working with wood. It's similar to working with people, each piece is unique. It requires the understanding of when to be delicate, when to be forceful, and even when to do nothing. Upon achieving the right combination the results are beautiful and can last a lifetime."

TESTIMONIALS: "The Phil Albers child sized drum set that I bought from FTRC was an excellent purchase, both in price and function. I gave it as a gift and it was a hit! The little man who received it really loved it and went around drumming and singing. That was priceless for me." - Dawn McCovey
