This sterling silver and marcasite necklace is from the Allen Jamieson estate. The collection belonged to his mother whom had excellent taste or at least was the recipient of gifts from someone with excellent taste. Most of the pieces are stamped 'MASHA STERLING' and seem to be part of a set. This piece, although stored with all the other pieces from this line does not have the same stamps. This necklace is stamped 'STERLING / 2'. It has an almost egg and dart design going on with a floral motif in the center. The pieces are from the retro period, which spans from 1935-1945, also called "Cocktail" jewelry, retro style originated in France with designs by Van Cleef and Arpels. It is characterized by the use of different colors of gold, whimsical sprays, bows, folds of fabric and a generous use of gemstones.

MARCASITE, is a common and an attractive mineral, sometimes called white iron pyrite and is an iron sulfide based stone that is very common. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure and is often mistaken for pyrite or ‘fools gold’. Marcasite is lighter and more brittle than pyrite and cannot be scratched by most metals. Marcasite’s surfaces appear pale yellow to almost white in color and has a bright metallic luster.

Marcasite, derives its name from the Arabic word for pyrite, it is the two minerals, marcasite and pyrite, that are often confused due to their similar characteristics. Marcasite is a polymorph of pyrite which means that it has the same chemistry as pyrite but a different structure and, therefore, different symmetry and crystal shapes.

Marcasite and Jet where made popular during the reign of Queen Victoria whom was in constant public mourning after the death of her husband. All of the United Kingdom of Great Britannia and Ireland would mourn with their Queen as was fashionable and these two materials where abundant. Since the 1920's it has been used as a diamond-like substitute.
