A chain with a pendant, designed by the Swedish designer Karl Erik Palmberg (1918-1983) for the Swedish Alton company. The pendant and chain are made of bronze, containing copper and tin and therefore more valuable than brass. The rolo type chain has a length of 74 cms/29” and a small spring ring clasp in good working condition. Some solder is visible on one side of the ring. The design of the pendant is modernist, a style which arose in Scandinavia during the 1940s-1950s, following the architectural and industrial influence prior to WWII. The cast pendant has an organic, open work design with an oblique bail. It has a somewhat hollow, textured front side with an antiqued finish and in the lowest hole in the center some verdigris is visible. The back side is flat, slightly domed, with an antiqued finish and the bail is marked “K E Palmberg” in italics and “alton” in lower case letters. Karl Erik Palmberg was head designer in the 1960s-1970s at the Alton company in Falköping, Sweden. This company was established in 1928 and since 1996 it operates under the name Svenskt Guldsmide & Design AB. Pendants with this same design, but made of yellow brass and silver, also exist. Very good vintage condition ; some verdigris in the lowest hole in the center and some solder visible on one side of the spring ring clasp. A nice example of the Scandinavian modernist style from the 2nd half of the 20th century.
