"mi ami" by Cindy Bowman

Art Deco! The juicy, citrusy colors remind me of Florida; I built this piece around the funky chartreuse green, patterned glass featured in the center.

Glass size: 11 x 22 inches; framed size: 13 x 24 (sizes rounded to nearest 1/4 inch). Frame is 1-1/2 inch wide solid oak, sanded satiny smooth and finished with medium walnut stain.

Framed, complete with chain, ready to hang and enjoy. (Solder and some of the art glasses contain lead; wash your hands well after handling.)

*about my (Cindy's) stained glass*

Quite simply, I absolutely l o v e glass. How it plays with the light - or is that how light plays with the glass? The colors. The textures. The sparkle. The pretty. Anyway, I'm hooked.

All of the hangings/windows offered here at artiZen2 are my own designs. The "quilts" are my interpretation in glass of traditional fabric quilt patterns; the others just seem to spring from my imagination, inspired by something I've seen or, sometimes, just "built around" a beautiful piece of glass that I've found. Occasionally I'll reinterpret a design I particularly like by using different glasses and color combinations, resulting in a piece as unique as the first "version," and with a whole new feel.

I begin by drawing the full-size design on a piece of paper, then trace the patterns onto the various glasses that I've selected. I hand-cut each piece of glass, grind them to fit if necessary, and then foil wrap them. Next, all of the pieces (sometimes there are more than 100 of them!) are assembled and squared up on a board, and then soldered together. I clean the glass thoroughly before Steve frames each hanging in oak moulding. Finally, he sands and finishes the wood, and attaches eye hooks and chain for hanging.

Each design, from conception to completion, takes anywhere from 18 to 40 hours, depending on complexity, size, and number of pieces. Some I end up liking so much that I cannot part with them; they hang in our cabin windows and serve as constant creative encouragement. In the morning and in the evening when the light shines directly through the glass, the rooms are bathed in shimmering, glowing color and rainbows dance across the floors. It's breathtakingly lovely.
