The details on this carved Bakelite pin are rendered so delicately, I must admit that it made me hesitate. It’s a small pin, about 1 1/2” long x 3/4” wide x 1/4” thick, so it’s not terribly heavy. And the carving is so fine that I wondered for a second if it might in fact be molded celluloid. But no, friends, it passed 409, simichrome and hot water tests with no problem.

Back to the details of this piece… The carving is marvelous. Dimensional and heavily executed (truly, madly, deeply!), three flawless roses. If you look, you can see the tool marks, and just imagine the hours the carver devoted to it. The color is caramel, which is slightly translucent when held to the light. The hardware is simple, a 2-piece embedded goldtone C-clasp. This is old school 1930s Bakelite. So the hardware isn’t as nice as you might find on some of the later pieces. It’s functional, but not great. I took the pliers to it to close the “C” a bit, because the pin wouldn’t stay closed. If you choose to wear it, it will stay on, but you’ll have to give it an extra nudge to get it in and out of the clasp. A minor annoyance, but I am pricing it accordingly.

The condition of the Bakelite is near perfect. It can stand to be cleaned, but it is almost pristine. No chips, flea bites or losses. On the back, patina is minimal, but there are a couple of larger scratches, one tiny mark next to the hardware, plus a slightly larger mark which appears to be a crack. It looks very old, because it has darkened with age. This really is a special piece that will not disappoint.
