Gemstone: Peridot

Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.70 Inches; Pendant width: 0.73 Inches

This pendant features a cluster of natural green peridot from Arizona. The raw stone measures 1.16 x 0.70 inches (29.4 x 17.9 mm) and weighs in at 41 carats. It is set in solid sterling silver wire.

Peridot is a stone which has been known and valued since ancient times. In the ancient world it was known as chrysolite (and possibly also as 'topaz'), and sourced from an island today known as Saint John's Isle in the Red Sea. Today there are a few major sources, in Pakistan, Burma and in Arizona. Arizona is unlike the other major deposits--while peridot is found as individual crystals in Pakistan and Burma, in Arizona the rough gems are found as large peridot 'bombs', or round clusters of intergrown peridot crystals. These are actually chunks of earth's mantle that were ripped loose and carried up to the surface in magma bodies, and often have other deep-earth minerals like chrome diopside associated with them. These stones often show a more yellow-leaning color, and also tend to have naturally fractured faces rather than flat crystal faces. They are still bright and lustrous, and show their color beautifully, but have a different and unique look all their own.

This stone is a nice example. It has a rich yellow-green color with naturally broken faces and good clarity.
