This charming old folding rocking chair is in superb condition. I believe it is made from cherry wood, but I can't be sure. The curved top of the chair has been hand carved with a floral design. There are a very few minor nicks and/or scratches in the wood owing to its use, but they in no way detract from the chair's beauty.

The front of the rocker is beautifully upholstered with floral petit points of pink roses and violets on a cream colored background; the back of the chair upholstered in a rich, dark green velvet. Both the front and back upholstery is in excellent condition, showing no particular wear and no spots, stains or discoloration.

What sets this rocker apart is that it collapses, or folds closed into a quarter-moon shape. Folding rocking chairs had become very popular in the late 1800s, but it was Adam Collignon who designed the first folding rocker in 1868. It was his space saving answer for the many who traveled cross country with their bulky rocking chairs tied to the outside of Conestoga Wagons.

Collignon's design became immediately popular and by the late 1800s many manufacturers were copying his folding rocking chair, sometimes known as a collapsible sewing rocker. This particular rocker is very much in keeping with one of Collignon's original designs.

I am not able to find a label or manufacturer's mark anywhere on the chair, but I know the chair to be at least 80 years old, as it has been in my family for that many years. I also cannot say whether the upholstery is original, but there is no question that materials and craftsmanship are of the finest quality.

This beautiful folding rocker measures 32" tall, 16" across, and 30" deep when open, with the seat measuring approximately 16" up from the floor. When closed the rocker measures 40" x 16" x 10" deep. A wonderful example of vintage Americana, this collapsible rocker, or folding sewing chair, will complement just about any decor, but really highlights the shabby chic or country motif. It is not only very functional, but also very comfortable and a very soothing rock.
