Having had the rare privilege of visiting the uniquely charming city of Einsiedeln, Switzerland back in 1980, I recognized the depiction of the hand-painted Monestary that crests the top of the hill upon which the city was built centuries ago.

The Basilica was erected as a monument to Our Lady of the Hermitage in Einsiedeln, Switzerland where many recorded miracles have taken place through the Madonna over the centuries.

As for the brooch, there are no obvious markings to denote the creator, nor the date of the piece, nor the type of metal frame that is finely crafted around the porcelain painting. However, it is so exquisitely crafted and minutely detailed that it seems likely it was designed by an old master craftsman.

The lettering at the top reads: M. Einsiedeln which I assume to mean the "Monestary of Einsiedeln."

The piece was probably purchased as a "souvenir" and may have been blessed by a cleric to be worn by the purchaser as a holy intercessory "medal" to Our Lady. It measures approximately 1" x 1".

Considering the piece looks incredibly old, it is in excellent vintage condition with obvious patina to the all-metal back.
