I have had this old poem by Valine Hobbs running around in my head for weeks. It begins like this, "One day when we went walking I found a dragon's tooth" and continues to chronicle the imaginative finds of a little girl. Because my childhood included many walks in the woods with my Dad and just as many of my own special finds, I decided to create a group of fairies to celebrate those finds. This is the second in a series that I've been working on.
I found a collection of antique wooden bobbins in my sister's antique shop and hauled them home with an idea already forming.
I covered this bobbin with a page from an antique ledger book. I attached a head and arms that are also antiques excavated from the grounds of German doll factories operating between 1890 and 1920. She's a black haired beauty with pale blue eyes and rosy cheeks.
I've adorned her with hat and collar from an old crocheted tablecloth and a bit of ivory lace and ecru ribbon. I added a tiny ivory satin rose to the hat.
The bottom of the bobbin is ringed with a worn collection of white mother of pearl buttons and I added wings of antiqued brass wire.
She's off to a secret fairy ceremony and is bearing a tray of fairy dust captured inside of a tiny shell. (The tray is a shard of old phoenix pattern china that I found "one day when we went walking".)
You did know that fairies hold secret ceremonies in the woods and often sprinkle fairy dust about to bring you luck.
She's 7 inches tall and ready to come spread some magic your way.
