Japanese scroll painting with enso for tea ceremony, mid-20th century. The enso is a Zen symbol representing the circle of enlightenment, a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body/spirit create. Exceptional calligraphy, mineral ink on paper, whimsical composition and impression. The meaning of the poem is “Tradition is important, but what we do in the moment is even more valuable.” Handpainted by Hashimoto Shojo (1939-), a Yagyuhotoku-ji priest and pupil of Oda Sesso. Signed/sealed. Comes with inscribed kiri wood tomobako storage box. Very good condition. Dimensions: 48” x 24”.
