beaver chewed stick

I think this item may be the most whimsical and fun thing in my shop. Please read on to find out more ...

Handmade pens are a commonplace item these days, but where else can you find a pen that's made by both the hands of a human and the teeth of a beaver?

My beaver-stick pens are made from genuine beaver-chewed sticks, collected from streams and ponds near my home in rural Massachusetts. As you might imagine, finding sticks that are the right combination of a good diameter, straightness, and attractively beaver-chewed isn't easy.

To make a stick into a pen, I carefully drill out the center of the stick and install commercially-made pen parts and mechanisms. These parts come from the same pen kits that are sold for use in lathe-turned handmade pens. The wood is finished with multiple coats of tough polyurethane and lacquer.

These are quality, fully-functional pens. The ballpoint tip extends and retracts when you twist the two sections of the pen body. The internal pen mechanisms are made entirely of brass and steel and should last a lifetime. These pens can be opened to replace the refill and they ship with genuine Cross brand refills for the best writing experience.

I ship each pen with a "certificate of authenticity" printed on the back of one of my business cards. This describes the materials and making of the pen. If you're giving a beaver-stick pen as a gift, this will make a nice addition to that gift.

The pen of this set is extravagantly long at 10-1/4 inches (26 cm) long and is about 1/2 inch (13 mm) in diameter at the tip end. A beaver has nipped off the end of the stick at the top as well as cutting off two forking branches at about the midpoint. Most of the bark has been nibbled off of this stick (tree bark is a favorite food of beavers), leaving behind a few patches of brown bark and traces of bark on the body of the pen. When beavers feed on a small stick like this, they often twirl the twig around in their dextrous paws as they nibble off the bark, like a person eating corn on the cob. The spiral pattern of toothmarks and traces of bark that this feeding leaves behind shows plainly on the stick.
The pen stand is made from a small log that beavers have chewed through and stripped the bark from. It's 5-1/2" (14 cm) long, 4-1/4" (10.5 cm) wide and 2" (5 cm) high. The base and the "mouth" of the pen-holding socket are made from walnut, and the base has a scalloped edge.

I don't think you can beat a beaver-stick pen for both its charm and its utter uniqueness, and this pen and stand set will make a real showpiece on anyone's desk. It's sure to bring joy to whoever owns it, uses it, or just looks upon it as a desktop objet d'art.
