How interesting! This 1909 "Harper's Machinery Book for Boys" sports a green pictorial cover with gold colored inlays. It is in fair condition. The cover has signicant damage and wear. The corners are worn. The book block is a bit loose and the pages age discolored.

Whether or not antique kitchenware is safe and up to the task of kitchen usage depends on a number of factors. Condition, material, and durability are some things to take into consideration. Some antique items may contain unsafe ingredients like lead or uranium. Regulations and testing for potentially unsafe ingredients were scarce until relatively recently.

Cast iron cooking is pretty straight forward! All pieces unless otherwise noted come seasoned and ready to cook with. Cast iron can be used on stovetops, ovens, grills, or even for campfire cooking. 

Let the pan heat evenly for about 10 minutes before use to help prevent sticking. We recommend using a steel spatula with cast iron. Until your seasoning is well established, avoid cooking acidic foods in non enameled cast iron for long periods of time. Cast iron also makes wonderful servingware, but we do not recommend storing foods in cast iron. To maintain the seasoning of your skillet make sure to always store your cast iron dry.
You can use any cooking oil to add seasoning to your skillet. Heat the skillet to 200-250° F until hot to the touch. Handle very carefully as cast iron gets HOT! Give the pan a wipe down with the preferred oil, then allow to fully cool. Wipe the excess oil until the pan feels dry. Too much oil will prevent the cast iron from seasoning properly. 

Once cooled and wiped, place the cast iron back into the oven. Bake for 1 hour at 100° F above the smoke point of the chosen oil - usually around 400°-500°F. The high heat is necessary to make the oil polymerize and form a hard, non stick surface. Smoke should be minimal if the pan was properly wiped, but we recommend opening the windows still. Let cool fully once more before handling.
Soap may be used on your cast iron skillet. With a properly polymerized seasoning soap will not damage the non stick surface. Like glass, cast iron can be sensitive to abrupt temperature changes. Use hot - not cold - water on cast iron that has not yet cooled. We recommend using a steel or chainmail scrubber. Do not soak your cast iron skillet. Scrub with plain or soapy water and dry before storing. 

If there are any especially stuck on spots, then warm some oil in the pan before scrubbing. If your pan develops rust, a short bath in a vinegar and water mixture and then some light scrubbing will remove rust. Rust can damage the seasoning so cast iron will need to be reseasoned if allowed to rust.
Cast iron has a very high heat emissivity - this means it radiates heat much more strongly than other cooking materials. Cast iron gets HOT. Very hot. Handle appropriately. You may have to use more than one potholder.

The best way to tell if your cast iron is properly seasoned is by feeling it and seeing how it preforms. Properly seasoned cast iron should feel smooth and dry - it should not be sticky, tacky, or wet. Once fully seasoned, oil will "bead up" if you attempt to season it further. If food is sticking to your cast iron, make sure you are properly heating it up and using enough oil. Very sticky foods like candy do better in enameled cast iron. If your cast iron seasoning seems to chip easily, try changing the oil you are using to season it.

Coloration is not a reliable indicator of proper seasoning. The final color and evenness varies depending on the pan and the type of oil(s) used for seasoning.
