Materials

ambrosia maple, birdseye maple

This unique napkin holder combines two remarkably beautiful -- and remarkably different -- forms of maple wood.

The upright wings of the holder are made from ambrosia maple; specifically from quarter-circle portions of a cross-sectional slice of a tree. Ambrosia refers to the pattern of colors in the wood, which occurs when a certain type of beetle burrows into a maple tree and introduces a fungus into the wood. As with spalting, the fungus causes the wood to change color. Towards the center of the tree the beetle/fungus incursions become more dense, resulting in the starburst pattern when the wood is cut in cross-section, as it is here. Cutting the tree in cross-section like this is by far the best way to display the beauty of ambrosia maple. As you can see, these sections of the tree trunk are "live edge" and include the bark of the tree.

The base of the holder is made from bird's eye maple, which is characterized by a random sprinkling of darker-colored dots interrupting the grain of the wood. This form of maple is much more commonly used than ambrosia maple. What causes bird's eye maple is still a mystery.

This holder is 4" (10 cm) high, and the base is 6-1/2" (16.5 cm) long by 3-1/4" (8.5 cm) wide. The space between the two upright wings is about 2-1/4" (5.5 cm) -- enough for a generous supply of napkins. In the pictures above, the white napkins are the standard size of about 6" (15 cm) square, and the printed napkins are 5" (13 cm) square. To preserve the natural look and feel of the wood, this piece is finished with linseed oil and paste wax.

This napkin holder will look great on any table or in any dining area. It's sure to be enjoyed and admired by anyone who appreciates the wonderful natural beauty to be found in wood and its nearly endless range of forms.
