Material

ambrosia maple

Carved from a drop-dead gorgeous piece of ambrosia maple, this dough bowl follows the traditional shape often used for such bowls; a shape that reflects the half-log it was carved from. These bowls are also called trench bowls or trencher bowls.

The term ambrosia maple refers to the streaky, starburst coloration of the wood. This occurs when a certain type of beetle (commonly called an ambrosia beetle) burrows into a maple tree and introduces a certain fungus (called ambrosia fungus) into the wood. As with spalting, the fungus causes the wood to change color. The tiny boreholes left by the beetles are visible at a few spots in the bowl, though any that were on the interior surface have been filled and sealed. Bowls like this one are one of the best ways to show off the wonderful coloration of ambrosia maple. The streaks of varying shades of brown become denser toward the center of the tree, resulting in a starburst effect at the two ends of the bowl.

Dimensions are 16-1/4 inches (41.5 cm) long, about 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) wide and 3-1/4 inches (8 cm) high.

Sanded and buffed completely smooth to allow for easy cleaning and finished with pure, food-safe walnut oil. The extended ends form comfortable handles that are perfect for lifting and carrying the bowl.

This bowl is completely suitable for its traditional purpose as a vessel for mixing, kneading and rising bread dough (it's roughly big enough for a two-loaf batch of dough). It could also be used to hold fruit, to serve bread or other foods, or used purely for decoration and enjoyed for the rare and exquisite wood, its soft organic shape, and as a beautiful representative of a traditional form of kitchen ware.
