This is a Smith Corona Sterling working vintage typewriter in black with metal-rimmed keys. The Sterling was one of Smith-Coronas most popular machines, selling well throughout its lifetime. This machine dates from the mid-1940s and was made just prior to Smith-Corona producing its post-war series of machines. As such, it retains the pre-war manufacturing characteristics that you don't find in post-war machines.

As with all my machines, I've cleaned, repaired, adjusted, and lubricated this typewriter, as well as installed a new bi-color ribbon, and it is ready to use as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this Smith Corona Sterling is in excellent condition. The black on black paint is stunning with its textured body paint and gloss black racing stripes that mark the ribbon cover and rim the base. There are few minor cosmetic flaws here and there, but they are hardly noticeable. The nickel-rimmed keys are quintessential marks of antique and pre-war machines and are still in stunning shape. The chrome accent and control pieces are similarly bright and shiny.

The only significant cosmetic flaw on this Smith-Corona Sterling is that it's missing its rear frame plate. This part would have been attached behind the carriage, but it wasn't when I found the machine. However, the lack of a rear cover does not alter the performance of the machine at all, so it's a cosmetic problem alone. Had the cover been present, I would have listed this machine as nearly flawless, which is my top rating for any of my restored machines.

This typewriter also comes with its original carrying case which is in very good working and cosmetic condition.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this Smith Corona Silent is in excellent condition. The platen has hardened some and will leave some indentations as you type, but it's not nearly as bad as most machines I find from this time period. The typing action is clean and crisp, and this machine is ready to tackle anything you want to write.

**WORLDWIDE SHIPPING**
I do ship internationally, so if you're interested in any of my typewriters, please contact me so I can give you a reduced shipping quote.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
This Smith-Corona Sterling is a beautiful typewriter and will make a beloved acquisition to the right person. If you are in the market for a sleek, antique machine for both writing and decorative purposes, this is yours. While this Sterling is capable of heavy writing duties. I'd personally recommend a slightly different machine for that task. (But, that recommendation is simply because there are newer machines that I feel are lighter on the fingers than antique machines like this that would make better everyday types.)

If you want a beautiful antique, pre-war typewriters with all the hallmarks of quality and design they represent--and are willing to accept the lack of a rear cover plate,--this is a great typewriter to have.

**MORE TYPEWRITERS / CUSTOM ORDERS**
I have a lot of typewriters, most of which I'm still in the process of refurbishing. If you want a specific machine, or don't see what you like here or in my shop, just let me know.

Thank you for looking, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
