pine root wood

Height: 1.75 Inches; Width: 8 Inches

A bowl carved in a freeform shape from the root ball of a small white pine tree. This bowl features an organically shaped interior with the rich coloring and swirling grain patterns common to root wood. The exterior has a few flat-cut faces where the thicker tendrils of the root branched off, and the rest is the course dark bark of the root ball. The contrast between the light-colored wood and the rough dark bark give this piece visual and tactile appeal. The bark of pine root is particularly knobbly and bumpy, and with a coat of polyurethane it glitters like a gemstone. For the interior of the bowl I used a simple finish of linseed oil. One of the joys of pine is the warm, inviting feel of it, and to preserve that in this bowl I didn't use a hard varnish for the interior. The result is a bowl that's a true pleasure to handle as well as to look at. Even without a glossy finish, parts of the interior display the property known as chatoyancy, where the apparent color of the wood changes depending on the angle you view it from.

White pine is one of the humblest of woods, not considered in the least rare or exotic. But here in this piece of root wood you can see that it can have a beauty that can hold its own against any other wood in the world. As with all my work, this wood has not been harvested from a living tree; this tree had been cut down when I found it. It had seeded itself on top of a boulder, with the result that the upper part of its root structure was a solid mass rather than a tangle of small tendrils. That made it perfect for carving this small bowl.

8 inches in its widest dimension and about 1-3/4 inches high (20 x 4.5 cm). As noted above, it's finished with polyurethane on the outside and linseed oil on the inside. This bowl would be perfect for holding candies or nuts, miscellaneous desktop or household items, or simply enjoyed as a beautiful decoration.
