The Easter Bunny (also called the Easter Rabbit or Easter Hare) is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the "Easter Hare" originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behavior at the start of the season of Eastertide. The Easter Bunny is sometimes depicted with clothes. In legend, the creature carries colored eggs in his basket, candy, and sometimes also toys to the homes of children, and as such shows similarities to Santa Claus or the Christkind, as they both bring gifts to children on the night before their respective holidays. The custom was first[ mentioned in Georg Franck von Franckenau's De ovis paschalibus in 1682, referring to a German
tradition of an Easter Hare bringing Easter eggs for the children.
The story of this festive hero takes us to pre-Christian Germany, when people still worshipped pagan gods. Special honor enjoyed then Eostre, the goddess of the dawn, fertility and spring. The hares helped distribute Eostre lamps. It is these eared animals as the most prolific animals have become a symbol of this holiday. But since chickens are not able to carry fabulously beautiful eggs, the Germans came up with a new hero – a rabbit or a hare. The first mention of fabulous hares appeared in a story published in 1680. Easter tale tells that it is the hare hides in his nest colored eggs made of chocolate.

Another legend shows that during the great Flood the hare saved everyone from certain death. After all, when the ark came across a mountain, a gap formed in the bottom. At this time the listener had closed it with his tail. Since then, the brave man is honored during the bright holiday.

Another version says that hares are ashamed of their tricks in the spring gardens and gardens. And they want to redeem themselves before the people.

There is also such a view on the appearance of symbolic hares. Easter holiday is celebrated in the second (after the vernal equinox) after the full moon Sunday, and hares are considered to be lunar animals.

But I wonder who thought to assign demolished eggs rabbits? There is an opinion that this idea came to mind Goethe himself. That's how he entertained his guests, hiding colorful eggs under bushes. And still in the bright morning of Christ's Sunday children of Western countries are looking for a nest with cherished sweets. However, the delicacy must still be earned, because the gift will get only the most obedient and kind. When chocolate gifts still found, no doubt that it is surprises from rabbits or rabbits. Also believed that finding a festive egg, a person attracts good luck for the whole year.

The idea of an egg-giving hare went to the U.S. in the 18th century. Protestant German immigrants in the Pennsylvania Dutch area told their children about the "Osterhase" (sometimes spelled "Oschter Haws"). Hase means "hare", not rabbit, and in Northwest European folklore the "Easter Bunny" indeed is a hare. According to the legend, only good children received gifts of colored eggs in the nests that they made in their caps and bonnets before Easter.
